Editorial Outlook: A First-Time World Series Champion, the Midterm Home Stretch, and France in the Streets | Oct 19

This week's visual stories run from a World Series that will crown a first-time champion, to a campaign season in its final two weeks, to cost-of-living protests sweeping France and beyond. The Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays open the Fall Classic Friday in Milwaukee, while early voting spreads to more states ahead of Election Day on November 3.

Across the Atlantic, France's protests have produced some of the country's most dramatic street scenes in decades, and the anger is spreading across Europe. Below you'll find context, coverage angles, and the Newscom searches we think will serve your stories best.

World Series: Brewers vs. Rays

A First-Time Champion Is Guaranteed

The 2026 World Series is set, and it comes with a built-in storyline: whoever wins, baseball crowns a first-time champion. The Milwaukee Brewers swept the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers 4-0 in the NLCS to reach their first World Series since 1982. On Monday night, the Tampa Bay Rays joined them, beating the Cleveland Guardians 7-3 in Game 6 to take the ALCS 4-2 behind home runs from Junior Caminero and Yandy Díaz.

Game 1 is Friday, October 23, at American Family Field in Milwaukee at 8pm ET, with Game 2 there on Saturday. The series then shifts to Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg for Games 3 through 5 starting Monday, October 26, with Games 6 and 7, if needed, back in Milwaukee on October 30 and 31.

It's also a matchup of the best records in each league: Milwaukee posted an MLB-high 103 wins, Tampa Bay won 98. Neither club is a big spender, and both play in small markets, which makes this a natural Series for underdog and hometown framing.

What to look for:

  • Previews and matchups: Caminero and Díaz from the ALCS clincher, Brewers stars from the NLCS sweep, and side-by-side team looks for preview packages.
  • Celebration imagery: the Brewers' NLCS clinch and the Rays' pennant-winning night give you jubilant crowd and clubhouse shots for any "how they got here" piece.
  • Ballparks and fans: American Family Field and Tropicana Field set the scene for local-color features, tailgates and watch parties as the Series unfolds.
  • History angle: Milwaukee's first trip to the Fall Classic since 1982 invites archive pairings with today's team.

Newscom's collections already include the Brewers' NLCS run and clinch celebrations, with partner agencies covering every game of the Series as it unfolds.

Midterm Elections

Two Weeks Out, the Campaign Hits Full Volume

Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, and the stakes are broad: all 435 House seats, more than a third of the Senate, and governorships, state legislatures and ballot measures across the country.

Early voting is well underway. In-person voting opened Monday in Texas, Colorado, Connecticut, South Carolina, Arkansas and Alaska. Hawaii, Louisiana, Missouri, Utah and Wisconsin open Tuesday, Delaware and Maryland follow on October 22, and Florida, Michigan, New Jersey and New York open on October 24.

Get-out-the-vote rallies are adding color to the final stretch, including Saturday's Vote Fest NYC, with its "Long Live the Vote" banners, drummers and handmade signs.

What to look for:

  • Early voting: lines at polling places, ballot drop-offs and "I Voted" moments as more states open each day this week.
  • On the ground: yard signs, billboards and voter guides give explainers and race previews a strong sense of place.
  • Rallies and travel: get-out-the-vote events, rallies and candidates on the road in the final days.
  • Election Night prep: build your lightboxes now for results-night and day-after coverage.

Newscom's midterm collections bring together fresh campaign and rally imagery from our partner agencies, with new coverage arriving daily through Election Night and beyond.

France Protests

Europe's Cost-of-Living Anger Spills Into the Streets

What began in September as high school protests over teacher shortages and school conditions in France has grown into one of the country's most turbulent protest movements in decades. Unions, students and activists hoping to revive the "yellow vest" movement joined forces on Saturday, October 17, when the Interior Ministry counted about 550,000 marchers nationwide, including some 110,000 in Paris.

Largely peaceful marches against rising fuel prices and the cost of living gave way to clashes, looting and fires in Paris, Marseille, Nice, Bordeaux, Lille and other cities. In Limoges, rioters set the 19th-century town hall ablaze, collapsing its spire and leaving the building largely destroyed. Authorities say at least 2,400 people have been arrested, curfews are in place in parts of Paris and Lille, and President Emmanuel Macron called for calm in a televised address on Sunday.

The anger isn't confined to France. Rioters clashed with police around Milan's Piazza del Duomo, housing protests in Spain preceded Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's call for a November 29 snap election, Brussels students are marching against tuition increases and education cuts, and tens of thousands marched through Lisbon over rents and wages, with protests also under way in Albania.

What to look for:

  • The scale story: mass marches in Paris and across France for pieces on how a school protest became a national movement.
  • Damage and aftermath: the burned Limoges town hall, looted storefronts and cleanup scenes for follow-ups and explainers.
  • Government response: Macron's address, police lines and curfew enforcement.
  • The European picture: Brussels student marches, Madrid housing protests and Lisbon rallies for regional roundups.

Newscom's partner agencies are covering the movement city by city, from mass marches and street clashes to the smoldering Limoges town hall, with fresh images arriving daily as the protests spread.
