Dr. Manmohan Singh is the thirteenth Prime Minister of India, and as such, he serves as the chief adviser to the President of India and is over the executive branch of government. Dr. Singh has a long background in economics that includes a doctorate degree from Oxford, which is why he is in the position he is in today.
Singh’s greatest accomplishment came when he was the Financial Minister in 1991. At that time, India was facing a severe economic crisis. According to Meet the PM: Prime Minister of India- Dr. Manmohan Singh, “In what was to become the turning point in the economic history of independent India, Dr. Singh spent five years between 1991 and 1996 as India’s Finance Minister. His role in ushering in a comprehensive policy of economic reforms is now recognized worldwide. In the popular view of those years in India, that period is inextricably associated with the persona of Dr. Singh.”

According to Reuters, “The Top Story of 2013,” Singh will be a character to watch in the coming year. The past two years of Singh’s government has been filled with corruption, scandal, and economic downfall. As this is an election year for the Prime Minister, it will be interesting to see if he can hold onto power and lead them through to better times as he is already trying to do.
Singh says that he has already taken steps to reform the economy. He is also trying to restore peace to India after violent protests erupted all over India in reaction to the gang rape victim who died.
