Americans love pie. They sit on our dining room tables every Thanksgiving and Christmas, and grace our picnic tables on the 4th of July. We love stuffing our faces with them so much, that we even propose pie eating contests at any state or county fair. And we always get a good laugh out of them when they get thrown in someone’s face. So is it any surprise to the rest of you that there is a Great American Pie Festival?

It wasn’t a surprise to me, nor was it a surprise that Crisco sponsors the event which happens this Saturday and Sunday, April 28th and 29th. The festival is held by the American Pie Council (and that’s where I got surprised). Yes there is an American Pie Council, also known as the APC, who’s “committed to preserving America’s Pie heritage and promoting American’s love affair with pies.” Does our love affair with pies really need to be promoted? I crave pie on a regular basis, I’m not really sure I need encouragement to purchase or bake a pie. In fact, discouragement might be better for me. But if you are interested in all things pie, you can become a member of the APC, and help in preserving America’s favorite dessert.

We have decided here at Newscom to do our part in supporting pies in honor of the Great American Pie Festival. So check out these images (and the more we have back at Newscom) of delicious pies!

Pie parties put an interesting twist on bridal showers. Marcia Mermelstein has a business she calls Pie in the Sky where she leads the group through how to make a couple of types of pies. They bake while the bride is opening her gifts and each guest gets to take a pie home with them. Pies included clockwise are: maple-nut, blackberry swirl, sweet potato, buttermilk and Snickerdoodle pie.
