Pictures of the Week: Ice Castles

ice-castles

Ice Castles While some may be feeling fed up with icy conditions this year, Brent Christensen is embracing the cold. The 50-year-old artist from Alpine, Utah, creates extraordinary structures one might assume only existed in the imagination. For the past four years, Christensen has been perfecting the craft of making tall structures, using nothing but icicles as building blocks. He developed an interest in the unique craft way back in 2000 after he and his family moved from sunny California to chilly Utah. CB2/ZOB/Supplied by WENN.com/Newscom. Talk about a skill you never knew you had…and it only took 4 years to perfect! Brent Christensen, has worked to carefully piece together 5,000 icicles each day, using snow and water mixtures, to create some of the most beautiful and mesmerizing ice sculptures you’ve ever seen.

Luckily our partners at WENN have captured the majesty of these amazing sculptures, and we’re here to share them with you. Continue reading →

People do crazy things to their hair. I once dyed my brunette locks red, and that was living on the edge for me. Granted there are plenty of people out there gutsier than I, who sport mohawks, dreadlocks, and colors never found naturally on a human being. But how many people have you seen make their head look like a work of art? I had never, until I saw the work of Radames Perez. Continue reading →

Pictures of the Week: Dear Santa

Letter to Santa

Letter to Santa. Kelly Redinger / Design Pics/Newscom. Find it on Newscom: depphotos059257

I was a procrastinator even as a kid, so I don’t think my letter to Santa ever got mailed until Christmas Eve. Which by that point I think we can all assume the elves already have the presents wrapped, so my letter wasn’t very effective …  Maybe I would have been a little more on top of things had I known about Dear Santa Letters week. We have all been subjected to YouTube videos, pictures posted by a “friend” on Facebook or those forwarded chain emails. And let’s be honest, they are typically just plain ridiculous … However, they make us laugh, smile, or roll our eyes, and the two minutes it took to view it probably made your day in some way. In my experience, many of these internet sensations seem to involve cats. For whatever reason, cats bring some kind of joy to the human heart (even for the avid dog lovers out there – they’re lying if they say some of these pictures don’t make them smile). Why is this? Well it’s most likely because they are cute, and furry, but they also do some pretty darn funny stuff sometimes.  People also force them to do a lot of silly things. Anything for a good laugh, right? So today we thought we’d share some of our most adorable (and not so adorable) images of cats. Continue reading →

Pictures of the Week: The Eyes Have It

Slit-lamp image of eye showing iris. Mark Maio/Newscom. Find it at Newscom: pttmedical008913.

They say the eyes are the windows to the soul. And sometimes there’s more to a picture than meets the eye. A beautiful image is always a sight for sore eyes. So keep your eyes peeled for these next worthwhile photos. Ok, ok I’ll stop with the eye cliches. (In my defense I looked up an eye idiom list and felt the urge to use some…Has anyone ever heard of “Close your eyes and think of England”? I think I’m going to use it in conversation some time.) Now that I’ve tortured you with almost a full paragraph of painfully overused phrases, you should really look at some of these fabulous pictures of eyes, both human and animal, we found on our site. After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder! (Sorry, I couldn’t resist one last parting shot.) Continue reading →

Pictures of the Week: Stunning Modern Dance Photos

Dramatic figure of a dancer in gold body bag human head forms in the background. Guy Cali Stock Connection Worldwide/Newscom. Find it at Newscom: scphotos014265.

My first introduction to modern dance was in fifth grade at some sort of assembly. I thought it was cool back then, and I still do today. It seems like modern dance gets a bad rap for being kind of weird or untraditional, but that’s what makes it so amazing. Because there aren’t really any rules, dancers and choreographers have free reign to stretch the bounds of their creativity. If they feel like importing tons of rice and putting it on the stage, it’s not a problem. If they want to have their entire dance be underwater, it’s no big deal. There’s a lot of potential to create something amazing and beautiful in that, as these next few pictures prove. Continue reading →

Pictures of the Week: Shooting Things Just Got Infinitely Cooler

A can of Spam. y60/ZUMA Press/Newscom. Find it at Newscom: zumawireworldphotosfour402049.

Ah spam, the universal question mark. Is it meat? Is it some sort of alien intelligence? No one really knows. But I bet you’ve never thought about shooting it, both in the gun and photography sense. Great idea, isn’t it? However, before you race off to pick up your gun and camera I have to break it to you. It’s been spectacularly done already. Oh and there’s one other little thing: it’s also spectacularly dangerous. Continue reading →

It’s Earth Day. In order to truly celebrate Earth and its many wonders we decided to take a step back  … way back and see the whole picture. We’re talking the whole Earth, from space. While other well-intentioned photo sites will be focusing on Earth and its resources, pretty places, or endangered animals and the like, we’re going to talk about what really matters. The whole enchilada. Continue reading →
