While Fighting Irish fans everywhere are suffering in sad silence, the Crimson Tide are reveling in jubilation. After a 42-14 romping at the BCS Championship game in Miami Monday night, ‘Bama celebrates its 3rd championship victory in the past 4 years. The ocean can be your sunny and tropical friend in paradise, but it can quickly turn into your foe–churning your boat in its waters, crashing onto rocky beaches, or simply bumping into unexpected ocean objects (i.e. Icebergs=Titanic Demise).

Even before photographs, fascination of these shipwrecks would prompt commissioned paintings of survival, tragedy, pirates, and treasure. (Newscom has many!) Today we have movies like the Goonies, and Pirates of the Caribbean–and tomorrow we may have more movies about current wrecks like the Costa Concordia. Continue reading →

Year in Review: Costa Concordia Update

Salvage crews began preliminary work on preparations to refloat the half-submerged Costa Concordia cruise liner in what is set to be the biggest ever operation of its kind. A barge has moved next to the liner and the ship’s radar has been removed from the upper deck. The swimming pool slide and the large yellow funnel will be taken off in coming weeks.The 290-metre-long (951 feet) cruise liner, operated by Carnival Corp’s Costa Cruises unit, capsized off the Tuscan island of Giglio after hitting rocks on January 13, 2012. At least 30 people died and two are still unaccounted for. The preliminary work has begun before the ship is stabilized, which will happen in the next few months. With more rough weather predicted over the weekend, rescue workers have had to put their search for survivors and victims on hold while they wait for safer search conditions. With the sea pounding the capsized Costa Concordia, even the slightest movement could trap rescue workers inside the ship, adding more drama to an already tragic event in the Italian sea. With 23 people still missing from the Costa Concordia crew ship, photographers have captured rescuers who are still searching the ship, trying to find any survivors.
