National Flag Day began on June 14th 1885 when a young teacher, Bernard J. Cigrand in Wisconsin set a US flag of his time (only 38 starts then) on his desk and asked his students to turn in essays on the meaning of the flag. Thereafter Mr. Cigrand persisted in spreading the celebration of the flag nation-wide. He finally succeeded and was rewarded for his long years of persistence on May 30th 1916 when President Wilson “issued a proclamation calling for a nation-wide observance of Flag Day”. It was thirty-three years later in 1949 when President Truman officially designated June 14th of every year as National Flag Day in the United States. Continue reading →
