By the time of the Olympic closing ceremony there will be more than 2,100 medals awarded to athletes. That may sound like a ton until you realize that there are over 10,500 athletes in London most of them will be going home empty handed. The focus is on the winners, as it should be, but it is also important to remember that behind that happy joyful person is a line of people who worked just as hard but came up short. We saw gold-medalist 400m runner Kirani James, representing a little country of 100,000 people, trade bibs with Oscar Pistorius, the first ever double amputee in the Olympics. The men’s marathon does not take place until the last day of the games, Sunday August 12, but on July 31 two tennis players treated fans to a marathon set which broke the record for longest set in Olympic tennis history, which was previously 36 games. Milos Raonic, of Canada, pushed the fifth seeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to a third set which took 48 games to decide. Continue reading →

Whenever I have a few free minutes I like to flip through the networks with Olympic programming and see what sports I know nothing about are on. As the Olympics continue to roll along Gymnastics have started to make the big headlines along with all the stories coming out of the swimming pool. That’s what the tag line on the official website of Eric Shanteau says.  At 28, the swimmer is making his second Olympic appearance (his first was Beijing) and will compete in the 100- meter breaststroke where he finished second at the Olympic trials. Coming into the 2012 Olympics as the defending gold medalists, a lot of expectations rest on the women’s basketball team.
