They say “third time’s the charm”. Maybe that’s what all of Misty and Kerri’s opponents in beach volleyball were betting against, but in this instance the third time was the charm that’ll end up encased, next to two other Olympic gold medals somewhere in Walsh’s and May-Treanor’s houses. In the final round to determine who would get the gold for the 2012 London Olympics Beach Volleyball Tournament it was between the legendary duo, and two sister Americans, April Ross and Jennifer Kessy. As Jennifer Kessy stated: they are the best team of all time.
It couldn’t be more obvious how close May-Treanor’s and Walsh’s partnership is. For eleven years they have dominated at what they love; their drive for this year’s gold not only stemmed from the given, but from their last time playing professionally together. Although Walsh will carry on, “I want to win so badly for this fantastic friend and teammate over here,” Misty May-Treanor (35) is headed from the platform with her 3rd golden victory then home to retirement., her husband LA Dodger, Matt Treanor, and to have a family. The duo will not be seen with their game faces on in Brazil’s 2016 Olympics or any tournament hereafter.
Since we’ve seen them last in Beijing they’ve both taken unforeseen “thumps”. Shortly after their success in 2008, Misty May was invited to compete on Dancing with the Stars. Two weeks in she ruptured her achilles tendon which resulted in almost a year off for rehab. In this time she wrote her autobiography Digging Deep in Volleyball and Life as well as beginning her own business of volleyball clinics. As for Kerri, shortly after her 2008 success at the Olympics she and husband, Casey Jennings found out she was pregnant. Nine months later little Joey was born and celebrated, but not to be outdone, he was soon joined by little Sundance who arrived about a year after his brother. Life is very different for the two and will continue to change as Misty starts her own family and Kerri finds a new partner. Despite their team of two dispersing their friendship can only continue to grow and thrive, “I’ll probably see more of her after I’m done than I do now. We can actually go have coffee and hang out together. It’s going to be fine.
