Just for Smiles: Somewhat Absurd Pictures of Rabbits

rabbit with two baby alligators

Don't laugh - you would look just as surprised as that rabbit if you found two baby alligators snuggling up to you. The pally alligators belong to Tom Roberts, of Wirral, Cheshire. Mirrorpix/Newscom. Find it on Newscom: mrpphotos231246

Perhaps I’ve missed the boat on the concept of photographing rabbits, but I was just blown away by the fact that when I tried to find a few cute and cuddly pictures I instead came across images of rabbits placed in really absurd situations. Like cuddling with an alligator. Or with a hamster that looks like it’s terrified. Or chasing a dog. Or in a flower pot. Or with a penguin. Or in a basket … with a fox. I seriously could keep going.

But maybe it’s just me. Maybe everyone else can find it normal. Rabbits are pretty non-divisive creatures (they’re not like cats v. dogs where you feel like you have to pick a side) and they apparently get along with all sorts of animals. And, after reading Watership Down, I feel like there are a lot of rabbits out there just ready to push the boundaries and explore the great unknown, so perhaps showing rabbits outside of their comfort zones and interacting with creatures that are different illustrates the broad reach that rabbits can have. I think I’m reaching too hard.

Either way, rabbits make me smile. Whether it’s smiling at how absurd some of the pictures are, or just because these rabbits can just be so stinking cute and cuddly looking, they’re a good pick-me-up on a Monday afternoon.

Eight baby rabbits

Eight baby rabbits whose mother died when they were two days old have been reared by Mrs. C. Wilkinson of Jubilee Retreat, Chingford, and her little assistant Gladys Wyton, aged 6, who prefers to feed them with a medicine drop feeder when they are separated in flower pots as then she knows exactly how much milk each rabbit gets. I included this last one mostly because the story is just absolutely absurd. Who would smuggle a rabbit into a zoo?

17 baby rabbits

All it took was 60 minutes and a little bit of bunny charm. Finding himself smuggled into the rabbit enclosure at Battersea Park Children's Zoo, Archie, the lop-eared albino rabbit, set out to do what bunnies do best. By the time he was discovered, only an hour later, Archie had mated with three female resident rabbits. The result was a brood of 17 baby rabbits just a few months later. ZUMA Press/Newscom.
