Around the World: Rock of Cashel

Cashel is a little town in Ireland that holds some of the country’s greatest tourist attractions – most prominent being the iconic Rock of Cashel. The Rock of Cashel is a group of medieval ruins that were built on an outcrop of limestone. These building include a 12th century round tower, High Cross and Romanesque Chapel, a 13th century Gothic cathedral, a 15th century castle, and the Hall of the Vicars Choral which has been restored.

The Rock of Cashel is also called St. Patrick’s Rock, and Cashel of the Kings, cashel is the Irish word for castle. According to legend, St. Patrick played a great role in the Rock’s history. Locals believe the Rock of Cashel came from a mountain called Devil’s Bit, about 20 miles away, but landed where it is now when St. Patrick banished Satan from a cave.

This site is also where St. Patrick converted the King of Munster in the 5th century as well. For several hundred years after that conversion, the Rock of Cashel was the traditional seat for the kings of Munster. This was given up after the Norman invasion, and in the 12th century the castle was donated to the church. The rest of the buildings that have survived were built in the 12th or 13th centuries.

West, Texas One Month Later

April was a rough month. We were all witnesses to serious tragedies in the United States. We watched as Boston lived a nightmare as bombs went off at the finish line of the Boston Marathon and the hunt for the perpetrator ensued. One month later, we here at Newscom reflected on all that had happened. And we want to look at another event that shook the nation and happened to occur within days of the Boston bombings, the West, Texas fertilizer plant explosion.

On April 17^th a fire broke out at the West Fertilizer Company storage and distribution facility in West, Texas. This caused an explosion that killed 15 people, injured more than 160 people and left many buildings damaged including two schools and a nursing home. Along with the massive damage it caused, the explosion left a 93 feet wide and 10 feet deep crater.

A one million dollar investigation had been taking place over the past month, in hopes of finding the cause of the explosion, but the search has come up dry. In a highly anticipated news conference yesterday (May 16^th) officials released that they were unable to rule out the potential three reasons including a malfunctioning golf cart located near the plant, a faulty electrical system, and arson. They also did not comment if they believe West paramedic Bryce Reed had any involvement. He was arrested recently for possessing bomb-making materials.

The sad reality is that although there will be further investigation, a cause may never be determined. Leaving those who lost loved ones without any answers.

We love our partners, and this week we want to showcase Africa Media Online. Africa Media Online is an organization located in South Africa that is dedicated to telling Africa’s story through Africans. This story telling can come from photos like those below, or audio files or text.

Africa Media Online has collected this showcase of birds of prey. A bird of prey is a bird that primarily hunts vertebrates. What immediately comes to mind are those gross vultures, but it turns out the category is much larger than I had realized.

Taken to the most specific meaning of the term “bird of prey” a lot of common birds that most people would think of are excluded. Characteristics of a bird of prey include sharp talons, keen eyesight for spotting prey from the air, and relatively large beaks. Most of the time the females are larger than the males. By using this narrower term of bird of prey, pelicans, seagulls, and penguins would all be excluded since these birds use only their beak to fight their prey.

The most common birds of prey, and the ones you’ll see the most in these pictures include: eagles, ospreys, kites, hawks, buzzards, harriers, vultures, falcons and owls. For more pictures, be sure to check out Newscom.com!

A small owl occuring mainly in bushveld and dryer regions. Feeds mainly on small rodents. When disturbed or frightened, elongates its body, raises the ear tufts and closes the eyes till they form slits. In this way it becomes completely camoflaged as it blends with the colour of branches. They do not build their own nests but take over nests of other birds or breed in naturally occuring hollows in forks of trees. A clutch of 2 to 3 eggs are usually laid. This tiny African owl is best known for its disproportionaly loud call. Active during daylight hours as well as nightime, it hunts mainly insects but has been recorded successfully hunting and killing prey as large as doves. Soccer superstar David Beckham has decided to end his 20 year professional career at the end of the Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) season. Beckham will play two final games for PSG May 18^th against Brest and at Lorient May 26^th. The announcement came four days after PSG captured the Ligue 1 title giving Beckham a league title in four counties, a first for an English player. Despite Beckham no longer competing on the pitch fans, will still get plenty of Beckham and his family in the fashion world.

Growing up in London, Beckham began playing soccer in the local parks and had dreams of playing professionally when he grew up. His parents were also big fans of the sport and Manchester United and passed their love of the team onto their son. In 1991 Beckham signed with the Manchester United youth team. In 1992 Beckham saw his action on the United first-team in a League Cup match against Brighton & Hove Albion. Beckham would continue to play for Man U until 2003, winning 6 Premier League championships, 2 FA Cups, and the 1998-99 UEFA Champions League title.

After Beckham’s relationship with Manchester coach Coach Alex Ferguson deteriorated Beckham left the team to play for Real Madrid and later the LA Galaxy. Beckham would help both teams claim league titles winning La Liga in 2007 then the MLS cup in 2011 and 2012.

As Beckham played in other countries he would always return to represent England in international games. Beckham played 115 games for England and served as captain for 6 years. Beckham scored 17 goals including a classic goal against Greece to send England to the 2002 World Cup.

With his career as a soccer player coming to an end, Beckham has plenty of other things to occupy his time including his modeling charities, and family. Beckham married his wife Victoria in 1999 and has four kids: Cruz, Romeo, Brooklyn, and Harper. May 26^th might be the last time we see him play, but it won’t be the last time we see the Beckhams.

Barbara Walters. In not terribly shocking news, Barbara Walters announced her retirement on The View this week. Jimmy Kimmel joked about the announcement at the ABC upfronts: “I just want to take a minute to salute the great Barbara Walters. As you know, Barbara is leaving ABC after more than 50 years, to have a baby. My baby. I love you Barbara.”

Texas Tornadoes. Lots of damage was found Thursday (May 16th) after tornadoes ripped through Granbury, Texas. At least six people have been killed and many injured. 250 people have been displaced after nearly 100 homes were destroyed.

IRS. Scandal hit the IRS when it was revealed that the Internal Revenues Service was targeting conservative groups who had applied for federal tax-exempt status. Today President Obama announced Danny Werfel will take over as the acting IRS commissioner. The President accepted the resignation of Steven Miller over the controversy yesterday.

Angelina Jolie. In an article in the New York Times, Angelina Jolie revealed that she had undergone a double mastectomy. The news was splashed all over headlines around the world. People are praising her brave decision and thanking her for raising awareness about the deadly disease.

After NBC recently announced Jimmy Fallon would be taking over The Tonight Show when Jay Leno retires, it didn’t take long for the network (before the upfronts, of course) to announce Jimmy Fallon’s replacement, Seth Meyers.

The choice of the Saturday Night Live comedian did not come as a surprise to very many. His work in entertainment has very much emulated that of Jimmy Fallon, the most obvious being his years on the late night sketch comedy show SNL, and the fact that both sat on the Weekend Update desk, Jimmy paired with Tina Fey, and Seth with Amy Poehler. Although, for the last couple years since Amy’s departure, Seth has held his own at the desk making audiences laugh weekly.

This may have been what has given him the edge over any other possible competition, that and his incredible writing skills. Unlike his predecessor, Seth has dazzled as a comedy writer. He wrote the skits that starred Amy Poehler and Tina Fey as Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton, making it obvious why he has been a head writer since his promotion in 2006.

But Seth is not without amazing performance skills. Although he is only ever seen on Weekend Update, the years before his anchor job were spent making a ridiculous spectacle of himself along with his fellow cast members. He has also made movie appearances in films like New Year’s Eve and played one of Mindy Kaling’s earliest love interests on the show The Mindy Project.

What started off to be a bright and beautiful Patriot’s Day, ended in chaos, fear, and loss for so many. Unnerving events followed the two bombs that exploded into the crowds lining the Boston Marathon that Monday, include those that I can only imagine to describe as terrifying. Shrapnel, smoke, blood, and confusion was all that surrounded the Boylston Street finish line that afternoon.

The week after the bombings was taken over by anxiety and worry. Who, why, and how, were many of the questions people were asking, while over 250 hospitalized people underwent surgeries, amputations, and fought for their lives.

Three people died that day. Martin Richard (8), Krystle Campbell (29), and Lu Lingzi (23).

It was a tumultuous week at best, with scattered memorials, vigils, wakes and funerals. President Obama came to offer his solidarity, making sure that whoever did set the bombs off, knew that they chose the wrong city. Bostonians are never ones to back down from a fight. Despite heartache, people continued to show support for Boston. Most marathons that followed, paid tributes to those lost and injured, and many vowed to never stop running. Boston Strong became the city’s new slogan, and the One Fund for Boston Marathon victims has surged past the $29 million mark.

In the week’s aftermath, the FBI had identified 2 suspects by Thursday, showing a video of of 2 men walking through the crowd. It was only hours later, early Friday morning, that brought a carjacked Mercedes, a dead MIT police officer, an injured MBTA police officer, and and all-out grenade, pipe bomb, and gunfire shootout between police and the brothers known as Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

That morning Tamerlan was pronounced dead, and Dzhokhar was on the run. After an entire day of city-wide lock down, the night ended with the 19-year-old college student hiding in a boat, in a Watertown resident’s back yard.

As you can imagine, many questions still continue to be unanswered this past month after the marathon bombings. We continue to learn about the Tsarnaev family, those who knew them, and perhaps even try to reason out how this came to happen. But more importantly, the world should continue to focus on the strength drawn from tragic events like these, and those lives that will forever be affected.

We have to admit that the whole idea for this post revolves around something we recently read. Of course just because we read it recently doesn’t mean it was written recently. The question that arises occasionally is why is The Bronx called The Bronx? All the other boroughs don’t have a “the” in front of their names so why does the Bronx (or maybe The Bronx)? And on top of that, just so you don’t think that this blog posting is going to consist of The Bronx bashing, the above bucolic setting is the The Bronx River, right in the middle of an industrial area.

We are currently reading “Meyer Berger’s New York”, a collection of 250-word pieces that Berger wrote for the NY Times in the 1950s. One of those pieces debunks the urban myth that since The Bronx is named after the Dutch family that settled the area, the Broncks, it came to pass that it got its name from the phrase “We’re going to visit the Broncks”. Berger says this is a lot of hooey (as they said in the ’50s), citing myriad experts. First of all, they didn’t talk like that then and secondly, in our opinion, it’s difficult to get up to areas of The Bronx now with the MTA doing work on the subways. During the Broncks time who would ever want to visit them? It was the middle of “The Nowhere”.

Speaking of the MTA, they did The Bronx proud with their restoration of the East 180th Street IRT station. The old New York, Westchester, and Boston railroad station has been restored to its former glory. If not historically accurate in its restoration it certainly is more comfortable and pretty than the original.

And finally, the empty Kingsbridge Armory. Empty for ten years, this massive building is finally going to have some use. The NYC Economic Development Corp. with our beloved Mayor Mike Bloomberg announced that it would become an ice skating rink. Actually, several ice skating rinks. A veritable ice skating utopia in fact. It’s convenient to the subway so perhaps it will bring droves of ice skating lovers up to “Da” Bronx.

Managing any of the few sports team with a worldwide profile can be a daunting task because of the slim margin of error. At the same time, with some success, managers can become a living legends like Sir Alex Ferguson who racked up 38 trophies in his 26 years with Manchester United. With Ferguson announcing his retirement last week the next Manchester United coach will get the double whammy of managing one of the most popular teams in the world and replacing one of the best managers in the history of British football.

Ferguson was born and raised in Scotland where he grew up a fan of the Rangers Football Club. As a fan of football, Ferguson played himself and started his amateur career at 16 with Queen’s Park. He turned pro full time in 1960 with Dunfermline Athletic of the Scottish League. As a striker Ferguson lead the Scottish League in goals one season but he continued to struggle for playing time and with off the field distractions during his 10 year Scottish League career with Dunfermiline Athletic, Falkirk, Ayr United and his boyhood team Rangers.

As a player with Falkirk Ferguson got his coaching feet wet as a player-coach and then after his playing days were over he moved immediately into managing with East Stirlingshire for a year before taking over St. Mirren. Ferguson turned St. Mirren from a Second Division team into a First Division champion in only three years. The following year Ferguson took over Aberdeen where his disciplinarian style continued to work, leading the team to three Scottish Premier League titles and a European Cup.

Following Ferguson’s success with St. Mirren and Aberdeen his stock was at an all time high and he had a number of teams wanting his services. Ferguson turned them all down because he had his eyes on moving from the Scottish League to the English League to mange Manchester United. In 1986 Manchester made the move and fired their manager and appointed Ferguson as their new manager. After a slow start with Manchester United, Ferguson got them back to their winning ways in 1990 and would never look back.

Ferguson’s discipline style and the pressure he put on players would rub many stars the wrong way – including David Beckham. Many of the players would end up leaving the team, but winning cures all and Ferguson continued to win even after the stars departed. Including two Champions League titles, 13 premier league titles, five FA Cups and a FIFA Clup World Cup just to name a few.

Sir Alex Ferguson will no longer be on the bench with the United players but he will continue to work with the team as a director and club ambassador. One of his first moves was to select fellow Scot, David Moyes, to replace him as manager. Moyers has spent 11 years managing against Ferguson with Everton.

Falling from the sky, the Soyuz space capsule held three astronauts returning to Earth after their 5-month stint on the International Space Station. Among the three was Canadian astronaut Col. Chris Hadfield. Suddenly widely popular, Hadfield had used his Facebook feed (managed by his son Evan) to showcase some pretty spectacular photos of Earth over the course of the mission. Not only that, but recently Hadfield shot a video of himself doing a cover of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity”, which of course instantly went viral. Truly amazed at what new technologies can provide, Hadfield just wanted to expose more people to the wonder and amazement of space … Well, Colonel, seeing that you’ve probably made the first music video in space, I think it’s working!
