Grey or gray, however you prefer to spell it, is an under-appreciated hue. Rarely is it noticed or applauded and yet it does so much for us. If there weren’t any grey in the world we wouldn’t have great songs like Billy Joel’s “Shades of Grey” or Paul Simon’s great line in I Do it For Your Love, “We were married on a rainy day. The sky was yellow and the grass was gray”.
You can do that by scrolling below to see some other evidence of what grey does for us, then follow us back to Newscom for even more!
If it weren’t for grey how would we notice the other beautiful colors? Grey is often used as a background color and if we didn’t have it how would we emphasize, say an apple’s gorgeous vibrancy in a picture? My favorite kinds of artistic and abstract photos are when the backgrounds are a soft grey or sepia and one object is its true color and it just pops off the page.

If we didn’t have grey we wouldn’t have salt n’ pepper hair, or rainy days, or Gandalf the Grey, or Grey’s Anatomy! We really do owe the achromatic (neutral color) grey (yes, that’s an oxymoron) a big thank you for all that it does. I mean LOOK AT THIS GERBIL!! It’s adorable.
