The time spent in the limelight seems short these days for winners of American Idol. I haven’t seen or heard much from Scotty McCreery since his season 10 win and maybe it’s because I don’t follow country music closely, but then again I don’t really know who the American Idol winners are anymore. Yes there are frontrunners that have made it big like Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. And Jordan Sparks makes her appearance on the red carpet pretty regularly but I’ve noticed a trend that these are all women…
I’m all for girl power but the men need to start proving themselves. Out of eleven seasons of the show, seven males have come out on top; however their record sales cannot even compete with that of the female winners of the show.
That’s why I have high hopes for Phillip Phillips.
With a name like that, how could you not be a success? The twenty-one year old from Leesburg Georgia won the coveted singing competition this past May. And despite a ratings drop this year, it looks like the singer is helping to boost the Idol franchise. His coronation song “Home” had the most digital downloads in its debut week of any American Idol winner and came second to Kelly Clarkson’s “My Life Would Suck Without You” of most downloads of any Idol contestant. American Idol also had a record breaking number of votes cast in this year’s finale. So it’s starting to sound like this guy has promise.
If you listen to his song “Home” (a song he has been said to describe as too much pop for his liking) you will see why he doesn’t suck. Many critics don’t see eye to eye with Phillips, they like the song and think it is one of the best to ever come out of American Idol.
Phillip Phillips has been in the news today after undergoing kidney surgery which affected his stint on Idol, but it is said to he will be recovered and ready for the American Idol tour this July… Thank goodness!
