Like many out there, I was overly excited when New Girl debuted this past season. The quirky and adorkable Zooey Deschanel would be staring in her own show and from everything I heard, it sounded like a recipe for success. And although Zooey was not new to the spotlight, the cast who would be playing her best friends and roommates were unfamiliar names. Including the actor who plays the obnoxious but lovable Schmidt.
Max Greenfield has made his rounds on popular television shows like Ugly Betty, Melrose Place and Castle, but never a starring role like he has landed on New Girl. And maybe the 31 year-old actor just hadn’t found the perfect role, because honestly, he plays Schmidt so well, I can’t imagine another actor being as funny delivering those crazy lines.
Schmidt is conceited, over the top and is constantly having to put money into the “tool jar.” He’s a character that could easily rub audiences the wrong way but he doesn’t. Max Greenfield has managed to make people laugh week after week saying things like “Winston, you better watch it, man, because I will take you down. I had figure skating lessons until I was 13, and then my mom sobered up and realized I was a boy. Let’s do this!” When I stumbled upon this video, I think I cried. Max Greenfield really gets into character.
With the good news that New Girl will be renewed for a second season, I cannot wait to see what more Schmidt ridiculousness will happen.
