The folk band Bon Iver is getting a lot of attention lately as it is nominated in several categories at this year’s Grammy Awards. Comprised of band members Sean Carey, Michael Noyce, and Matthew McCaughn, you may be most familiar with frontman Justin Vernon. Vernon is also the founder of the group having started Bon Iver after the breakup of another band he was in. Although, Justin is more than humble when it comes to the success that Bon Iver has seen having been quoted as saying, “Bon Iver is often equated with just me, but you are who surrounds you, and for Bon Iver, Bon Iver I wanted to invite those voices as musical catalysts.”
Do you ever wonder how bands come up with their names? Well Justin Vernon has an interesting story when it comes to how he came up with Bon Iver… While bedridden with mononucleosis, commonly known as mono, Vernon took to watching episodes of the television series Northern Exposure. There happened to be a scene where characters of a town in Alaska emerged from their homes during the first snowfall of the season to wish each other a good winter by saying “bon hiver.” Liking this French phrase but not so much liking how the spelling of hiver looked similar to liver, Justin decided a good name for his future band would be Bon Iver.
Well it’s certainly has stuck as a good band name, and both Bon Iver and Justin Vernon are sure to be household names. So check out these images (and more we have back on Newscom) of Justin Vernon!
