When I think of Africa, I picture wild animals, rugged lands, and everything shown in Madagascar. However, as these aerials prove, South Africa is everything but that.

South Africa is located on the southern tip of Africa. It has eleven official languages, which reflects its very diverse culture. Two of its official languages are from European descent, English and Afrikaans, which reflects the history of South Africa. Continue reading →

The startling violence in Syria is not new news, but something that continues to sicken the world as it watches. With all kinds of complications, helping the Syrian coalition that has risen to challenge the violent dictatorship of Bashar al-Assad has turned into a chess match. And unless you’ve been avoiding all news, you’ve heard about Asma al-Assad and the interesting role she plays (or refuses to play) in this conflict.

Our partners at Polaris have put together a stunning collection of images showing some of the refugees from the conflict living in the refugee camps away from the fighting. The pictures show families and children and are a haunting reminder of the toll any conflict can take on the people living in the midst of it. Continue reading →

Pictures of the Week: The Sporty Seniors of Sun City

Sun-City-Arizona-Cheerleaders

Pat Weber, 81, leads the Sun City Poms cheerleader dancers as they rehearse in Sun City, Arizona, January 7, 2013. Sun City was built in 1959 by entrepreneur Del Webb as America’s first active retirement community for the over-55′s. Del Webb predicted that retirees would flock to a community where they were given more than just a house with a rocking chair in which to sit and wait to die. Today’s residents keep their minds and bodies active by socializing at over 120 clubs with activities such as square dancing, ceramics, roller skating, computers, cheerleading, racquetball and yoga. There are 38,500 residents in the community with an average age 72.4 years. Picture taken January 7, 2013. LUCY NICHOLSON/REUTERS/Newscom. License this image from Newscom.com: rtrlfive685680

When is it my turn to retire? Looking at these vivacious, vibrant, and of course sporty seniors, all I can think about is how much more fun they’re having than me on any given weekday. All I’m considering is whether or not I should start watching Downton Abbey before I’m too completely out-of-the-loop during lunch break conversations…

In January of 1960, American real estate developer Del E.Webb, launched a retirement community known as Sun City. Generating much more interest than anticipated, Webb was astounded at the 100,000-person turnout. As a result, Sun City, with its five model homes, shopping center, recreation center and golf course landed on the 1962 Time Magazine cover story. Continue reading →

Fuzhou Sports School is a school in the Fujian province of China where children are hand selected to train in hopes of bringing home gold in future Olympics. Some of the children are as young as four. China implemented this program in the 1950′s, and since then China has shown considerably more talent at the Olympic games, and their future doesn’t look like it will change.

Fuzhou is an amateur school, which means children attend class in the day then practice in their individual sports afterwards, sometimes up to eight hours of practice! Once a child has proven themselves valuable, they can be transferred to a professional school to be on a municipal or national team. Sometimes these children become the breadwinners in the family, as they win international contests and bring honor to their families. Pictures of the Week: Art of Mini Meals and Eating on Toilets

Shay Aaron has created a veritable banquet fit for famished foodie figurines with his mouthwatering miniature meals.

MINIATURE MEALS Shay Aaron has created a veritable banquet fit for famished foodie figurines with his mouthwatering miniature meals. The Tel Aviv based artist uses polymer clay and a 1:12 scale to cook-up, what he terms, his ‘tiny little grocery store’ of dollhouse sized delicacies and delights. From seafood, to superfood salads, soups to sushi, meat n two veg to moreish cakes n pastries, pizzas, poultry and even a good ol’ full English breakfast fry-up, Aaron’s miniatures menu would be guaranteed to whet the appetite. Were they actually edible. One crumb of comfort, these mere morsels can be worn as jewellery.  WENN.com/Newscom. License this image from Newscom.com: wennoddpix058495

Talk about portion control; Shay Aaron from Israel has perfected the art of creating entrees smaller than a penny.  With meals this tiny you’d think it impossible to have the detail Shay captures using polymer clay.

From Salmon-steak-and-lemon ear-rings to sandwich ear-rings and Orange-chocolate-cake charm bracelets, Shay can do it all. His favorite food is chocolate, but with several baking and cooking books at his disposal and inspiration from his mother in the kitchen, he is a true lover of food and making food.  Check out some of his work at Etsy. Besides the fact that black and white photos are old, there is an element of mystery to them; the brain knows they’re inaccurate depictions of the reality because no one is paper white. Our partners at akg-images have gone through their archives and digitally recolor some of those old black and white photos, helping us understand get more out of each picture.  Continue reading →

Each continent possesses its own unique beauty; Africa has the raw and primitive passion of nature, accompanied by its ferocious allure of the wild animals and flora. Asia, North America, South America, Antarctica, and Australia all have different features that make them beautiful. Then there’s Europe.

We received a collection of images from the GDT European Wildlife Photographer of the Year contest. This year, 2012, the winner was called “Stargazer” by Tommy Vikars of Finland. He snapped white-tailed deer underneath the stars at a feeding place just outside his home village. Continue reading →
