Much like Discovery Channel’s ever so popular Shark Week, Tornado Week is The Weather Channel’s big programming event of the year. Starting yesterday (April 29th), The Weather Channel began its week-long dedication to the terrifying and often super destructive weather event known as the twister. And in the same way people are captivated by their own fear of those large deadly sharks, people will be glued to their television screens watching the specials on vicious cyclones. One of the joys of Newscom is that we bring to the public awareness holidays that many people have forgotten about. Today’s such holiday is National Arbor Day, the day when the community is encouraged to plant trees.

And let’s be honest, this a pretty great idea since trees are so incredibly valuable to us. Even though nearly everything has turned digital, forests are still threatened by the impact humans are having on the environment. But this isn’t national soap box day, it’s a day to celebrate trees! National Park week is one of my favorites. I love looking at what nature can create, unparalleled by anything man made. If we can endure these last few weeks of spring and its random rain showers, then summer will finally be here. Continue reading →

Building one of the greenest homes in North America is no easy task, but if there is one person who is up for it, it would be Ed Begley Jr. His Green credentials go back to the first Earth Day in 1970, and when he is not putting in time as a successful film and television actor, he is busy at work promoting green products, educating others about the conservation of earth’s natural resources and most importantly being a living example of a sustainable life. With a name like Nemo, how bad could this upcoming, potentially historic blizzard coming to New England be? All that comes to mind is a cute little animated clown fish… with one small fin. Or rather, perhaps the weather forecasters were thinking of the vengeful Captain Nemo from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea? Whichever the case, the media hype has begun, and this mischievous winter nor’easter is fast approaching. Continue reading →

These captivating photos are a testament to beauties around the world, beauties which rarely dwell in the same place at the same time.  Scattered pockets of loveliness and majesty throughout, the earth is a treasure trove; deep in the ground’s belly and spanning farther than the highest mountain peak. I never realized how creeped out I get by bats until I started looking through hundreds of pictures of them. I suspect that it has something to do with the cabin my family goes to once a year, where one room has been dubbed the “bat room.” Regularly, a bat will find its way through the walls of the cabin and make a home in that room. It’s really disturbing to be sleeping, then suddenly feel something flying over your face. Continue reading →

I had pictures of Mickey and his constant companion (originally Rover and belonging to Minnie; who’d a thunk?) playing before my eyes when I first received the assignment for this blog.  These pictures were quickly followed by confusion when I saw that Pluto had been demoted: no longer Mickey’s old faithful, what??  Ah, the culture of outer space. There is nothing more beautiful than photos taken in nature. It must be why so many couples opt to take engagement photos in the great outdoors. Because no matter how aesthetically pleasing a man-made construction is, it will never compare to what is created naturally on this earth.  Which is why nature has been the backdrop for many photographers, and how we can even have a Nature Photography Day.
