It’s the winter Olympic sport that doesn’t quite have the fan following like figure skating or ski jumping or even speedskating. But nonetheless, like all Olympic sports it takes a lot of hard work, a lot of physical conditioning and talent that us mere mortals could only hope to possess. The Biathlon is a fierce competition.
Biathlon combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. Competitors race on skis 2.5 kilometers before stopping and taking aim at 5 targets. They repeat this several more times in a race depending on the distance of the event the biathlete is competing in. For every target missed, a minute is added to their time.
The funny thing about the biathlon is that it isn’t something that’s a very familiar to people, in that it’s not seen in the real world. Most people who hunt in the winter do it by foot. Probably because it would be hard to sneak up on an animal wearing skis. However, the biathlon’s origins came from an exercise practice from Norwegian soldiers back in the 1800′s.
Biathlon is sure to be a sport to watch this winter. So be sure to check out these images and more back at Newscom of past Biathlon pics.
