Loretta Young was an Academy Award winning actress and she lived a glamorous life as a Hollywood actress starring in numerous films and the host of her own television show. Originally born Gretchen Young, in Salt Lake City, Utah, her family moved to Hollywood where she and her two sisters started acting. Although it was Loretta (her stage name given by actress Colleen Moore) who was the most successful.
Along with achievements in the film industry, Loretta had a lifestyle to fit that of Hollywood. Married for the first time at just 17, she eloped with fellow actor Grant Withers whom she starred in a film with. A year later the marriage was annulled, the same year their movie, Too Young to Marry, premiered (the irony is not lost on anyone). This was just a sign of the tumultuous romantic life she would have to come…
She would marry two more times. Her second marriage was to producer Tom Lewis who she had two sons with and her third was to fashion designer Jean Louis until his death in 1997. But it was her affair with Clark Gable which became one of the biggest scandals in Hollywood. The infidelity occurred while they were filming The Call of the Wild, and Gable was married. Loretta became pregnant and hid her pregnancy by escaping to England and blaming her absence on a childhood health condition. The child that resulted from the affair, Judith Young, was taken to an orphanage after birth and then “adopted” by Young in a cover-up. Judith grew up never knowing her father and it wouldn’t be until she was an adult that the suspicion of her conception would be confirmed.
Today (January 4th) would have been Loretta’s 100th birthday. And in honor of the occasion we here at Newscom would like to share some beautiful images of the late Loretta Young with you from our partners at Album. She was the essence of true Hollywood glamour. So be sure to check out these stunning photos.
