It’s one of our favorite times of the year, when our partners start putting together the best photos from the past year. Today we’re featuring the best images of 2012 from AFP (Agence France-Presse). This lightbox is full not just of great moments in the history of this past year, but also has some just stunning photographs from daily life around the world.
AFP is a world-wide multimedia news agency with more than 2,000 photographers, writers, and others working for them around the world. Their images tell a world-wide story and many have become the face of some of the biggest stories of this past year (recognize this photo?).
Between the big news events that have defined 2012 – the capsizing of the Costa Concordia, the US presidential election, weather disasters like Superstorm Sandy and the wildfires that swept across the western US, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the conflict in Syria, and the London Olympics – it’s been a big year for all of us. But it was an especially big year for AFP with the agency winning its first Pulitzer prize with photographer Massoud Hossaini’s picture of Tarana Akbari.
