A handout aerial view taken and released on January 14, 2012 by Italian Guardia de Finanza shows the Costa Concordia, after the cruise ship ran aground and keeled over off the Isola del Giglio, on late January 13. Three people died and several were missing after the ship with more than 4,000 people on board ran aground sparking chaos as passengers scrambled to get off. The ship was on a cruise in the Mediterranean, leaving from Savona with planned stops in Civitavecchia, Palermo, Cagliari, Palma, Barcelona and Marseille," the company said. Late Friday night just off the coast of Italy, the cruise ship Costa Concordia ran aground, ripping a 50-meter gash in the hull. Shortly after the ship keeled over and the 4,200 passengers on board struggled through nearly vertical hallways and stairwells to evacuate the ship.

It’s a dramatic and chaotic story, with three passengers killed and two more rescued from inside the ship late in the day Saturday. Earlier today the captain of the Concordia was arrested and is being investigated for manslaughter, causing a shipwreck, and abandoning ship.

Perhaps it’s because it’s the 200th anniversary of when the Titanic sank. Perhaps it’s because I just watched James Cameron’s Titanic a couple months ago and this story has some modern-day similarities. But when I got the text message alert from CNN early this morning that the Costa Concordia had been grounded can capsized, when I fell back asleep I dreamed that I was on a sinking cruise ship with Kate Winslett. It was a bit odd.

But the pictures from the capsized ship are dramatic and fascinating. Check them out and then head back to Newscom to see the latest pictures as they come in so we can help you share the story with your audience.
