Clement C. Moore’s 1823 poem reads:

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tinny reindeer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

“Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!”

It was with this poem that children all over the world began to believe that Santa Clause only managed to deliver presents to every house because he had flying reindeer to aide him in his travels. And so the stories and songs commenced. The easily-made-fun-of reindeer with the shiny red nose, became the most famous reindeer of all … and even Prancer got a movie.

Reindeer have become a symbol of Christmas. And unlike mystical creatures, like unicorns or dragons, they actually exist! They live wildly around the world, in Arctic and Subarctic regions, and are sometimes referred to as Caribou (Wikipedia so kindly redirected me). They’re real animals, but do they fly?  I think Charlie from The Santa Clause said it perfectly in this conversation with his step-dad:

“Neil: What about Santa’s Reindeer? Have you even seen a reindeer fly?

Charlie: Yes.

Neil: Well I haven’t.

Charlie: Have you ever seen a million dollars?

Neil: No

Charlie: Just because you can’t see something, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.”

So enjoy these beautiful images we have of reindeer here on Newscom, and we apologize for not having any real images of them flying.
