Welcome to Leap Day, the most awkward day of the year! Its where we put all the extra hours of the year that we couldn’t fit anywhere else.
February 29th also has some rather awkward traditions associated with it. For instance, it is more socially acceptable for women to propose to their men. And if the man refuses? Well, then he owes his ex-lover a silk gown and a kiss…but only if she was wearing a red petticoat when she proposed marriage. Complicated, eh? Also, babies born on Leap Day are invited to join a special society for people whose birthdays only come around once every four years. (One family even had three children born on consecutive Leap Days.)
To celebrate this sort-of holiday we’ve put together a collection of pictures that reflect the overall mood. Yes, slightly awkward pictures of people leaping are indeed the essence of Leap Day. For instance, the lovely picture below may be strange, but he sure makes me want to go buy some balloons and leap in the air to celebrate Leap Day!
