It takes a lot to empty out the city that never sleeps, but Hurricane Sandy brought New York to a literal standstill. For whatever reason, this picture of a lone tourist in a virtually empty Times Square really seemed to show what Sandy did to New York. And while we’re still trying to make sure we get things cleaned up and get aid to the people who need it, this picture seemed like a good one to lead with when talking about iconic, beautiful, tragic, and funny images from 2012.

We’ve put together a collection of some of the Newscom staff’s favorite images. The pictures range from ones that best represent the most dramatic events of the year to others that we just liked. I’ve included a few pictures in this blog along with quotes from the Newscom team about why they liked these pictures and why they were included in our “favorites of 2012″ list. Continue reading →

Unsurprisingly the some of the big news stories of the year like the election, the Costa Concordia, the Oscars, and the Olympics topped the list. But we were surprised to see things like JFK, the revamped Dallas TV show and 3D chalk drawings make the list.

Check out the list below and relive 2012 one more time before you move on to your resolutions for 2013.

10 Secrets to Searching on Newscom

Newscom has a lot of images on our site. According to the counter on the front page of the site, we have more than 75 million images, graphics, and videos just hanging out, waiting for you to find them.

This is good because the odds of finding what you need are high, even if you’re looking for something obscure. It can also be hard, though, because there are a lot of images to look through.
