The difference in the NHL playoffs often comes down to the goaltender – and this year’s final four are on top of their game racking up the first eight of the 16 wins needed to add their name to the greats on the Stanly Cup. In the conference final each team will face a familiar foe as the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils see a lot of each other in the Atlantic Division. In the west, Pacific Division rivals Phoenix Coyotes and Los Angeles Kings will butt heads for a berth in the Stanley Cup Final. Continue reading →

Ron Paul is Kind of Out of the Race

Congressman Ron Paul,

Congressman Ron Paul, a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, grants an interview before a fundraising event at the Holiday Inn Pittsburgh University Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on April 20, 2012 . Find it on Newscom.com: zumawireworldphotosfive366265

Many of you were probably as surprised as I was to learn that Ron Paul was sort of dropping his campaign for the GOP nomination. I wasn’t really surprised he dropped it, I was mostly surprised to find out he was still running. Hasn’t that whole GOP race to the top thing blown over? Continue reading →

It’s All Relative

If you’re a science fiction nerd like me and have ever read any of the sequels to Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card, then you know it tells the story of a man who is nearly 3,000 years old. No, he isn’t a science experiment gone wrong. Instead his body has been kept young by his time spent traveling at close to the speed of light. Its a crazy anti-aging regimen, and even though the book is fiction the idea of aging slower when traveling at high speeds is a real physical concept that is described by Einstein’s Theory of Special Relativity. I think dragonflies are some of the prettiest insects on the planet. They’re sort of like butterflies, but more…streamlined I guess you could say. Every dragonfly has two pairs of wings and an elongated body, its characteristic of their species. Not only that, but they are among the fastest insects out there. One field experiment clocked a dragonfly going sixty miles per hour. Granted, it wasn’t the most reliable experiment ever but that is still pretty cool if its true. Continue reading →

Motherhood is something universal. No matter where you are in the world, if you have a heart its strings are pulled with the sound of that word. There’s something beautiful in seeing a woman so swollen and inflated that she has to mimic a duck’s waddle to cross the street. Continue reading →

Around the World: The Galapagos

Visiting the Galapagos Islands (named for their famous giant tortoises) has been a dream of mine for a very long time. The islands are famous as the location where Charles Darwin discovered the many finches with specialized beaks that led to the birth of the theory of evolution. Aside from finches there are many more species of wildlife, most of them found only in the Galapagos. And because the animals have no natural predators, they haven’t learned to be afraid of humans. This means that its possible to walk right up to blue-footed booby without them running away. Continue reading →

Pictures of the Week: Belly Dancing

Dancing has always had a way of creating a little bit of controversy. Remember how Elvis gyrated his hips and how they could only show him from the waste up on television? The story of Footloose isn’t just fiction. The dance ban in Bomont actually loosely inspired the events that took place in an Oklahoma town. And even today, headlines are made about Dancing with the Stars dances that are “too sexy.” Although people should be a little more prepared for what they see: I’m pretty sure Bruno Tonioli warns on EVERY season that the rumba is the “vertical expression of a horizontal desire.” And belly dancing is no exception. I have to admit that I have been following the success of Anna Kendrick’s career. And by that, what I really mean is I see a preview for a movie, she appears on screen and I think to myself, “I’m going to see that film. That girl is a good actress.” Now, if you have only seen Anna in the Twilight movies where she plays Bella’s obnoxious faux friend Jessica, the role doesn’t do her any justice. (In fact, every actor in those movies are done an injustice when it comes to showcasing their talent, except maybe Kristen Stewart. The script allows her to showcase her one-expression face.) But go see Anna in Up in the Air, and you can see why she was chosen to star opposite George Clooney and nominated for an Oscar for the role. Continue reading →
